Our Board
The FSP is governed by a Board of high profile industry representatives. In addition, there are five Sector Panels, and Nation Panels in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These panels consist of senior representatives from employers and its purpose is to provide input and insight to the FSP to ensure that it:
- Is informed of future skills and qualifications requirements
- Is aware of market conditions and factors that impact on business
- Can develop appropriate solutions
- Can prioritise sector requirements and allocate resources
- Can respond in a timely and appropriate manner to sector priorities
- Can influence stakeholders on policy and strategy on skills, development and employability
Each sector and nation’s panel has developed a demand statement for skills, which has been the basis of discussions with Government departments and the Devolved Administrations and which is the basis of our focus.

Trevor Matthews, CEO Aviva UK
Trevor Matthews joined Aviva in December 2011 as Chief Executive of Aviva UK which comprises the Life and Pensions and General Insurance businesses. Trevor is also on the Board of Aviva plc and a member of Aviva’s executive committee.
Between July 2008 and June 2011 Trevor was director and Chief Executive Officer of Friends Provident plc (subsequently Friends Life). Prior to this he was Chief Executive of Standard Life Assurance limited from 2004 to July 2008. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Japan from 2001 to 2004 and Executive Vice President of Canadian Operations and Chairman of Manulife Bank from 1998 to 2001. Between 1996 and 1998 Trevor was General Manager Personal Financial Services of National Australia Bank and Managing Director, Legal & General Assurance Holdings Australia Limited from 1989 to 1996.
Trevor was President of the Chartered Insurance Institute from July 2008 to July 2009. In 1997 he was President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (Centenary Year).

Paul Boyle

In November 2010 Paul was appointed Chief Audit Officer at Aviva. Prior to this he was the Chief Executive of the Financial Reporting Council. The FRC aims to promote confidence in corporate reporting and governance. Its responsibilities include setting and enforcing accounting and auditing standards, setting actuaries standards and overseeing the regulatory activities of the accounting and actuarial professional bodies.
Paul is the Chairman of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators, having been appointed as its first Vice-Chair in September 2006.
Previously Paul was the Chief Operating Officer of the Financial Services Authority.
Paul was also with Cadbury Schweppes for 8 years, including a spell as Group Financial Controller and latterly as a Director of Cadbury Limited, with responsibility for Finance, Information Technology, Purchasing and Cocoa Buying.
He trained with Coopers & Lybrand, and spent 8 years with the firm including 2 years in Turkey. His first job in industry was with WH Smith Group plc

Bernadette Brown, Human Resources Business Partner, Santander UK
Bernadette was appointed to the FSP Board in 2009.
She joined Santander UK as Human Resources Business Partner in 2004.
Prior to joining Santander, Bernadette was employed Head of HR for Armagh & City District from 2001. Previous to banking and her local government role, Bernadette was HR Director for ISA International plc. Reporting to the CEO, she had overall strategic responsibility for the HR function across Europe, including UK and Ireland.
Bernadette is a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, and is married to Ken with one son, Adam.

Adrian Clark, Cardiff Location Director and Chief Operating Officer for Protection throughout the UK (6 different locations) for Legal & General Assurance Society Ltd.
Adrian has been instrumental in developing the collaboration between Legal & General and Cardiff University to create the Medical Underwriting Academy. The success of the Academy has led to several teams of highly skilled professionals within the financial services industry.
He has been employed for 32 years within the Financial Services industry, with the previous 12 years developing Legal & General's presence in South Wales, which now employs over 1500 staff.
He has been employed in many sectors of the Insurance industry from UK Life and Pensions to General Insurance and as an overseas advisor for development opportunities in both Thailand and Indonesia.

John Earls is Research Section Head at Unite, the UK's largest trade union with 1.5 million members in the private and public sectors. Unite operates across the finance sector and represents staff at all grades and all occupations. John was previously Head of Research at UNIFI, the specialist finance sector trade union.
John is a Research Associate at the London School of Economics and a member of the Advisory Committee of the ESRC Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE).

Simon Ellis, Managing Director of Unit Trusts at Legal & General Investments, started his role in October 2009. He has a wealth of financial services expertise, having worked in the industry for over 25 years. He was the Managing Director of Fidelity International Multi-Manager business and has also been the Managing Director for the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC), tasked with undertaking a government-prompted review of the FSSC's future strategy. Simon was also a Board Director of the Investment Management Association for five years.

Peter is a Chartered Accountant and joined the FSP Board in 2010.
Peter has had an extensive career in Financial Services more recently holding non- executive directorships of UK General ( a Leeds based MGA), Keoghs (a Bolton based legal practice), and The Chartered Insurance Institute. He is also Chairman of UKGI (a Compliance Advisory business). Prior to this Peter was Chief Executive at AXA Insurance from 2001 until 2008 and before that held a number of senior roles at LloydsTSB, including Strategy Director Retail Banking, Managing Director eCommerce and Finance Director of the General Insurance and Life Intermediary businesses.

Angela Knight CBE

Angela Knight, CBE, Chief Executive, British Bankers Association
After leaving Bristol University with an honours degree in chemistry, Angela worked for the American industrial gas company Air Products Ltd. She was the product development manager for the application and sales of nitrogen as an inert carrier during the treatment of ferrous metal components.
She went on to set up and was Chief Executive of a specialist contract heat treatment company treating precision engineering components - Cook & Knight Metallurgical Processors Ltd - and associated process plant manufacturing company.
From 1987 to 1992 she was Councillor and Chief Whip on Sheffield City Council. She entered Parliament in 1992 as MP for Erewash and was Economic Secretary to the Treasury between 1995 and 1997, when she lost her seat at the General Election. She was the Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers from September 1997 to December 2006.
She is currently the Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association. She is also a non-executive director on the boards of Brewin Dolphin plc and Tullett Prebon plc.

Les was appointed to the FSP Board in 2011 and is chair of the Banking & Building Societies sector panel.
Les joined RBS as Managing Director of Retail Products in January 2010.
Prior to joining RBS Les spent 12 years with Citibank, including the role of CEO Retail and Citigroup Country Officer for Australia, before moving to St George Bank as Head of Retail in 2008.
Les has a B.Com (Hons) from Edinburgh University. He began in brand management at Procter & Gamble.
Les has lived and worked in numerous countries including Singapore, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Argentina and Australia.

Brendan Nelson

Brendan joined the Board of the FSP in 2008 and sits on the Finance Committee. He is a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales
In November 2010 Brendan was appointed a non-executive director of BP and in April of the same year he was appointed a non-executive director of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. In July 2011 he joined the Financial Reporting Review Panel of the Financial Reporting Council.
In 1984 Brendan became a partner at KPMG. He served as a member of the UK Board of KPMG from 2000 to 2006 following which he was appointed vice chairman until his retirement in 2010. In KPMG International he held a number of senior positions including Global Chairman, Banking and Global Chairman, Financial Services.
Brendan was the first professional accountant to be appointed as a member of the Practitioner Panel, a UK statutory body that provides industry oversight to the UK Financial Services Authority and served 6 years as a panel member. Prior to his current audit responsibilities, Brendan has been the Global Audit Partner for ING Bank NV, Credit Suisse Group, NatWest Group, Rothschilds, and Standard Chartered plc.

Richard Wastcoat

Richard Wastcoat, Former Managing Director, Fidelity Investments International
Richard Wastcoat received a BS in Business Administration from Lehigh University, Bethlehem Pennsylvania in 1983. He joined Fidelity Investments in Dallas, Texas and relocated to London with Fidelity International in 1989. He worked on the development of Fidelity's business in a number of markets in South East Asia while based in Hong Kong from 1989 to 1996. He returned to the UK in 1996 and in 1999 became Chief Executive of Fidelity Investment Services with responsibility for the UK mutual fund business and subsequently Funds Network, Fidelity's Platform business. In addition to his role in the UK he held additional roles concurrently. These included Fidelity's businesses in Spain and the Nordic Region , the Middle East and Africa and since Fidelity's Asset Management Business in India. He retired from Fidelity in September 2008.
Mr Wastcoat was a member of the Board of the Investment Management Association. He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director at First State Investments and at The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments where he is also Chairman of the International Committee.
